Ecospecifier Issues of Concern / Red Lights:

Chromate treatment of base coil steel-

The base coil steel used to make LiteSteel beam is treated with hexavalent chromate, applied following application of the Zinc/Aluminium coating. This is done to protect the product during transport .

The hexavalent chromate treatment involves the application of chromic acid. This acid reacts with the metallic coating to form a chromic oxide (Cr2O3). In this form the Chromium (while still being a heavy metal) is stable and not known to be carcinogenic. However, in high pH’s (alkaline) chromic oxide (Cr2O3) may revert back to hexavalent chromium, which is a potent carcinogen.
